James played Legion baseball in 1993 for Northern Hills in Sturgis, South Dakota. He served as a Field Artillery officer in the US Army after earning his commission from the ROTC program at the University of South Dakota in 1998. Now he is an aerospace engineering student with a desire to work for NASA and a lifelong love of baseball.
